Does the tragedy of thalidomide prove that animal research doesn’t work?

Opponents of animal research often cite the birth defects caused by thalidomide as a checkmate example of why research and testing with animals are ineffective. The National Anti-Vivisection Society claims the thalidomide tragedy proves how “misleading” and “detrimental to human health” testing on animal models can be. PETA agrees and takes this position even further, arguing that the FDA’s post-Thalidomide requirements for expanded and more comprehensive animal testing actually stifles progress in finding cures.
