Who’s twisting the “9 out of 10” claim for their anti-research agenda?

Individuals and groups opposed to animal research leap at any opportunity to convince others that animal research is unnecessary, useless, or even harmful to human health. So it is no surprise they’d latch on to a statistic that “9 out of 10” drugs tested on animals fail in humans! Anyone who has taken elementary school math knows that 10% isn’t a passing grade… of course, many people do not understand how research and clinical trials work, which is why their statement is so misleading. But when your goal is ending animal research altogether, you probably don’t want people thinking about how animal research has led to successful treatments for diseases like diabetes, cancer, polio, HIV, and countless others, you want them thinking about the failure rate…

Below are a few anti-animal research activists whose names pop up repeatedly when the failure rate of drug testing in animals is brought up as reason to end animal research. Shocked? We aren’t

  • Humane Society International — this “PeTA in a suit” organization campaigns on ending animal testing.
  • Theodora Capaldo — former president, New England Anti-Vivisection Society.
  • Marc Bekoff — co-founder of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals who feels mankind needs to abandon the idea of “human exceptionalism.”
  • Cruelty Free International — an interenational organizataion devoted to ending animal research
